೧೯೬೧ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಲಲಿತಕಲಾ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿಯು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿತು. ಪ್ರಾರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗಳ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನಗಳನ್ನು ಅಲ್ಪ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಏರ್ಪಡಿಸುವುದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಕಲಾ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಕಾರ್ಯಾರಂಭಮಾಡಿತು. ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸರ್ಕಾರವು ೧೯೬೪ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಲಲಿತಕಲಾ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿಯನ್ನು ಅಧಿಕೃತವಾಗಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿ, ಅಂದಿನ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಸಚಿವರಾದ ಶ್ರೀ ಎಸ್. ಆರ್. ಕಂಠಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿಯ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರನ್ನಾಗಿ ನೇಮಿಸಿತು; ಅವರು ೧೯೬೪ ರಿಂದ ೧೯೬೭ ರವರೆಗೆ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದರು.

೧೯೭೪ರಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಡಿನ ಹಿರಿಯ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಕಲಾವಿದರಾದ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೆ.ಕೆ. ಹೆಬ್ಬಾರ್ ಅವರು ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿಯ ನೇತೃತ್ವ ವಹಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಮೇಲೆ ನಾಡಿನ ಕಲಾಲೋಕದ ಚಿತ್ರಣವು ಬದಲಾಯಿತು. ಮುಂದೆ ಅನೇಕ ಮಹನೀಯರು ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿಯ ಭವ್ಯ ಭವಿಷ್ಯದ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರು.

ಇಂದು ರಾಜ್ಯ ಸರ್ಕಾರವು ಯುವಕರಿಗೆ ಆದ್ಯತೆ ನೀಡಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಯುವ ನೇತೃತ್ವ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿಗೆ ಲಭಿಸಿದೆ. ಹೊಸ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಗಳು – ಹೊಸ ಪರಿಕಲ್ಪನೆಗಳು ಎಂಬ ಘೋಷ ವಾಕ್ಯದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕಾರ್ಯ ಆರಂಭಿಸಿರುವ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿಯ ಹೊಸ ಯೋಜನೆಗಳು, ವಿನೂತನ ಕಾರ್ಯರೂಪಗಳು ನಾಡಿನ ಕಲಾ ಕ್ಷಿತಿಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಸ ಆಶಾ ಭಾವನೆ – ವಿಶ್ವಾಸ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಿದೆ.

In 1959, the Central Academy organised an art display, for which the art pieces were carefully selected. Sri G. Venkatachalam, a well known art critic and also a member of the Central Lalitkala Academy strived hard to organise this event. Sri Anna Rao GunaMukhe, who was then the Minister of Education and Culture, inaugurated the event.

This event led to the formation of Lalitkala Academy in the State. It was the wish of many that fine arts from Karnataka should become a part of the larger national cultural stream.

Karnataka Lalitkala Academy began functioning in 1961. In its initial years, the Academy used to organise the display of art works on a small scale. Finally in 1964, Government of Karnataka officially established Karnataka Lalitkala Academy and nominated the then Education Minister Sri S.R.Kanthi as the Chairperson of the Academy who held the post from 1964-67. He was followed by Sri. K.V.Shankargowda (1967-70) and Smt.Sudha Reddy (1970-74).
